What’s Changing in PUBG Mobile Esports?
The transition from PMPLs to PMSLs signifies a significant transformation in the PUBG Mobile esports landscape. Initially launched this year for the SEA region as a semi-franchised league, the PMSL featured 15 slots for partnered teams and five slots allocated through open qualifiers.
Following the success of this format in testing, PUBG Mobile Esports is expanding the PMSL concept globally. This format promises fans more action throughout the year through LAN events.
This revamp suggests a blend of guaranteed slots for established teams alongside open qualifiers. It offers aspiring professionals a chance to compete on the big stage.
While the specific regions for PMSL implementation remain unclear, speculation points towards aligning with major PMPL Championship regions. This includes MEA, Americas, Europe, and South Asia.
Tencent, the driving force behind PUBG Mobile Esports, expressed the goal of this transformation: “This aims to provide more content, enhance competitive integrity, and ensure stability for the teams in our ecosystem.”
Detailed insights into the revamped esports ecosystem are promised during the PMGC 2023 Grand Finals, scheduled from December 8 to 10 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Tencent’s History with Regional LAN Leagues
This move echoes Tencent’s previous endeavor in 2020 when the company announced plans to introduce offline formats for PMPLs. The ambitious plan included the construction of a dedicated esports studio in Katowice, Poland, to host events like the World League (PMWL) 2020 and the PMPL Americas.
Unfortunately, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the abandonment of these plans. Now in 2024, PUBG Mobile fans can finally anticipate the long-awaited regional offline tournaments.
